As CBD continues to rise in popularity, words and terms related to the industry will also become more common in everyday conversations. These words may be unfamiliar due to their limited use until recently, so we’ve created a list of CBD related words so that you can stay in-the-know about all things CBD!
CBD – arguable the most important term of them all, CBD is an abbreviation for the word, Cannabidiol, which is one of the naturally occurring cannabinoids found in cannabis plants
Cannabinoid – cannabidiol is a cannabinoid, but not all cannabinoids are cannabidiol, a cannabinoid is one of the chemical compounds that interacts with the endocannabinoid system receptors in the human body
CBD Infused – this phrase can be found attached to more products as the popularity of CBD increases and simply means that CBD is present in the product, it is common for there also to be a description explaining the quantity of CBD present in the product
Edible – any food containing cannabis
Endocannabinoid System – also known as the “ECS,” this system is responsible for helping the human body maintain balance and contains receptors that support the functionality of the entire human body
Farm Bill – the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 is also known as the “Farm Bill” and refers to legislation that made CBD products legal to purchase in all 50 states in America and requires industrial hemp to contain less than .3 % THC
FDA – FDA refers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is a regulatory government agency that has the power to regulate cannabis and cannabis-derived products since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill
Hemp – a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant that also is grown specifically for industrial use
Marijuana – common term used to reference the female Cannabis sativa plant that produce flowers and have phytocannabinoids that are used for their medicinal and psychoactive properties
Phytocannabinoid – the chemical components in cannabis plants that copy the endocannabinoids that the human body naturally produces
Psychoactive – describes something that has a property able to change the brain function due to its interaction with the human body’s central nervous system
Salve – an ointment applied directly to the skin made from the cannabis plant
Sublingual – reference for the application of a substance under the tongue
THC – also known as, “Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol,” is one of the main cannabinoids found in cannabis and is responsible for the psychoactive reactions of the human body
Topical – refers to how a product is applied to the skin (commonly through a salve or cream)
